George R.R. Martin has no patience with mini-rooms and how they make it impossible for new writers to succeed. In his latest blog post, the author talks about how he got his start in TV by writing …
During the Long Wait, I've been reading a lot of other fantasy writers like Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, Joe Abercrombie and Patrick Rothfuss. I've noticed that while the worlds in their novels are similar to Westeros, they have large stylistic differences. For example, the worlds Sanderson creates are just as brutal as ASoIaF but the main Still, writing books isn’t digging ditches. The creative spark cannot be harnessed and utilised like electricity, always available at the flick of a switch. George RR Martin is not your bitch. Later on, Martin takes me to a small house with a book tower that serves as his office and writing space. (The home where he lives with his second wife, Parris, is nearby.)
GRR Martin seems to grasp what aspects of characters to present to make them relevant and memorable. For example everyone remembers Ned Stark as honourable, its an relatable trait, and its relevant to the plot, we also hear about how he is a good ruler who listens to his subjects, but equally lacks the skills and motivations to play politics.
